1A Boys Regionals: Lynden Christian 74, Seton Catholic 57

Ted House

The Lynden Christian Lyncs advanced to the state quarterfinals, using a big second half and cruising past the Seton Catholic Cougars, 74-57, Saturday, at Mount Vernon High School.

The Lyncs broke free from a 23-23 tie at halftime, putting up 51 points in the second half.

Senior forward Luke VanKooten hit 3-pointers from every angle, hitting five on the night for 21 points.  Senior guard Gannon Dykstra hit tough jumpers all night, totaling 23 points.

Sophomore guard Dawson Hintz, who had few offensive opportunities in the first half, and did not score, got a lay-in in the opening seconds of the third quarter, and sometimes, that’s all it takes.

Hintz got a second lay-in a short time later, then began to hit from the outside.  He finished with 19 points, all in the second half.

The Lyncs hit ten 3-pointers in the game, but didn’t go without a little showtime action either.  On a hard cut down the lane by Hintz, sophomore forward Kaden Veldman dished a pass to Hintz that led him to the rim for a two-handed jam.  Then Veldman was on the scoring end of a no-look pass by sophomore guard, Gunnar Dykstra, who drove the left baseline and dished the assist.

The Cougars were led by 6-6 sophomore Kaiden Wilson, who scored 17 points, four under his season average.  Senior guard Lance Lee added 12 for the Cougars, with senior guard Brady Angelo finishing with 10.

The Cougars will play a loser out game in the SunDome on Wednesday at 3:45pm against Cashmere.  The Lyncs will play in the state quarterfinals against either Bellevue Christian or Kings, on Thursday, at 7:15pm.
