The Lynden Christian Lyncs used a 22-5 fourth quarter run to overtake the Naches Valley Rangers 57-54, in a regional contest at Mount Vernon High School, on Saturday.
The Lyncs trailed the entire contest, until a 3-point shot by junior guard Estela Hernandes went down with under two minutes to play, giving the Lyncs a 55-52 lead.
The Lyncs were down by at much as 17 points to the scrappy, strong and aggressive Rangers who caused havoc to the Lyncs offense. They still trailed by 16 points entering the fourth quarter.
That’s when the Lyncs began to roll. Freshman guard Tyra Dykstra hit one 3-pointer in the third quarter, then hit four more in the final period, all touching nothing but net on the way through. Add to that, a three by senior guard, Danya Dykstra, and the tiebreaker by Hernandez, and the Lyncs have a comeback to be talked about for a long time.
Tyra Dykstra scored 17 of her team high 19 points in the second half, with 12 in the fourth quarter. Senior forward Allison Shumate added a dozen for the Lyncs.
The Rangers were led by the school’s all-time scoring leader, senior guard, Maddy Jewett, who scored 28 points on a variety of outside shots and clever moves to the rim.
Naches will play a loser out game against Nooksack Valley, Wednesday at 2:00pm, in the Yakima SunDome. The Lyncs skip to the state quarterfinals. They will play on Thursday, at 10:30am, against a team still to be determined.
