1A Girls Regionals: Nooksack Valley 64, Hoquiam 42

Ted House

The #9 seed Nooksack Valley girls defeated #16 Hoquiam, 64-42, Saturday, at Mount Vernon High School.  The Pioneers advance to a Wednesday, 2:00pm game in the Yakima SunDome.  They will play the loser of the game between #8 Naches Valley and #1 Lynden Christian.

Junior guard Peyton Bartl almost single-handedly got the Pioneers a big early lead.  She hit four 3-point shots in the first eight minutes, scoring 15 of the Pioneers 20 first-quarter points, and a 20-8 lead.

The Grizzlies didn’t go away, however, as Bartl was held to just two free throws in the second quarter, as Hoquiam cut the Pioneers lead to 30-27 at halftime.

That’s when the Pioneers went to 6-1 senior forward, Grace De Hoog.  De Hoog hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter, and added another in the final frame as the Pioneers built the lead to more than 20 points in the fourth quarter.

De Hoog scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half, while Bartl led the Pioneers with 25.

The Grizzlies were led by the 12 points of freshman forward Aaliyah Kennedy.

The season ends for the Grizzlies with a record of 15-9, while the Pioneers take their 17-8 record back to the SunDome, where the two-time defending champs get a shot at a third year with the gold ball.
