The Lynden Lions got a record-breaking night from senior forward Anthonly Canales, as the two-time defending champions defeated the Prosser Mustangs, 74-59, in a state/regional contest at Jake Maberry Gymnasium, Friday night.
The two-time defending state tournament Most Valuable Player scored 35 points and broke the career scoring record at Lynden. He needed 22 points to surpass Christian Zamora (2019), and his 25-point first half, was enough.
Canales scored 11 points in the first quarter against the feisty Mustangs, for a 20-19 lead. Canales then reeled off 14 of the Lions final 17 points of the half by hitting three straight 3-point shots. The Lions led 41-30 at halftime.
The Mustangs stayed within striking distance with their ability to get shots off, and their ability to steal the ball away any time an offensive player brought it below the waste.
The Lions third quarter focus was on the interior of the Mustangs defense, as junior forward Brant Heppner scored the first five baskets for the Lions at point-blank range. The Lions biggest lead was 18 points, late in the third quarter.
Junior guard Kobe McClure led the Mustangs with 22 points. Junior forward Killian Phillips add 13, and 12 for senior forward Jaden Peters.
The win moves the Lions (21-4) into the state quarterfinals, Thursday at 530pm, in the Yakima SunDome. Their opponent is yet to be determined.
Prosser will play an elimination game, Wednesday, in the SunDome at 9pm.
