The Anacortes Seahawks advanced to the state quarterfinals with a 69-56 win over the Columbia River Rapids, Wednesday at the Yakima SunDome.
With the Rapids defense focused on one of the state’s top scorers, Seahawks 6-6 junior guard, Davis Fogle, sophomore forward Micah Dickison got loose for eight first quarter points, but the teams were tied at 13-13 after one quarter of play.
Fogle moved to the middle of the Rapids zone defense, which opened up junior guard Jake Andrew on the outside, as he hit the first two shots of the second quarter, both 3-pointers, for a quick six-point lead.
But the Rapids came back behind the shooting of junior guard, Ari Richardson, who hit two 3-pointers in the final minute of the second quarter. The Rapids closed the half on a 12-2 run, for a 30-26 halftime lead.
Andrew started the third quarter like he did the second, and then some. Andrew cranked in his first four shots of the third quarter, all threes, as his personal 12-0 run gave the Seahawks a 38-30 lead with just over five minutes to go in the third quarter.
But back came Richardson with five quick points of a 7-0 Rapids run, for a one-point game.
Andrew’s last shot, a long 3-pointer from the left wing, sealed the deal for the Seahawks. It was his seventh of the game, with 1:40 left, giving the Seahawks a nine-point lead.
Andrew hit 7-16 from long range and finished with 22 points. Fogle did not connect on a 3-pointer but made 12-13 free throws and dished out six assists. Dickison hit 8-10 from the field and scored 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Richardson finished with 18 points. Junior guard Aaron Hoey scored 16, and senior forward Miles Fitzwilson added 12.
The Rapids, from the Greater St. Helens League, ends their season with a record of 18-8.
The Seahawks move to the state quarterfinals, and a date with the #3 seed, North Kitsap, Thursday at 715pm.
