2A Boys State Tournament: Prosser 61, Anacortes 53

The Anacortes Seahawks had their season end in the hands of the Prosser Mustangs, 63-51, in the elimination round of the 2A boys state basketball tournament, Friday, in the Yakima SunDome.

Both teams lost their quarterfinal games Thursday evening and didn’t have a lot of turnaround time to get ready for each other by the 2pm tip, and it showed early on the Mustangs, and late on the Seahawks.

After a 0-0 match with lots of early swings and misses, sophomore forward Micah Dickison broke the ice with an inside score, two minutes into the game.  By the time five minutes had come of the clock, the Seahawks had burst out to an 11-2 lead.

The Mustangs finally found their legs and came back to trail just 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.

By the time three minutes had gone by in the second quarter, the Mustangs had completed an 18-4 run, for a 23-17 lead.  But the Seahawks rallied to tie the game at halftime, 29-29.

The score stayed tight through the third quarter, and the Mustangs were poised to carry a three-point lead into the fourth quarter, but senior guard Davis Fogle was fouled on the 3-point shot and hit all three free throws with one second left in the third quarter.

With the score tied at 46-46 at the start of the fourth quarter, junior guard Jake Andrew nailed a 3-pointer to put the Seahawks on top.  But from there, things went south for the Seahawks.

The Mustangs tied it at 49-49 with 6:40 left, then added a couple buckets and a free throw for a 54-49 lead with 2:13 left.

The Seahawks were still within reach but seemed to hit the wall offensively.  Still with only the Andrew 3-pointer to speak of in the quarter.

Senior forward Cooper Barton hit a free throw, but the Mustangs beat the Seahawks press for a put-back and two lay-ins that finished a 14-1 run, and an 11-point lead with just over a minute to play.

A late 3-pointer by sophomore forward Ty Swapp gave the Seahawks just seven points in the final quarter.

Prosser senior guard Kory McClure led the Mustangs with 19 points, hitting three of four 3-point shots.  Junior Koby McClure scored 15 points and the 6-0 guard also grabbed nine rebounds.

The Mustangs also got ten points from senior forward Jaden Peters, and ten more off the bench from 6-7 junior Trent Russell.

Fogle finished with 17 points but hit only four of 19 shots from the field and did not score in the fourth quarter.  Dickison scored 11, nine in the first half, and pulled down 13 rebounds.

The Seahawks finish with a record of 21-8, while the Mustangs will take on Renton, Saturday, at 930am for fourth and sixth places.
