District Seeding: What to Expect

Hello again, Arpi Iguy here, out of the basement again to explain the final week of the District 1 2A and 3A RPI possibilities.

1A Boys and Girls (No RPI needed)

In the boys 1A, matchups are set as far as who plays each other.  Lynden Christian will play the Blaine-Mount Baker winner in one semifinal.  Nooksack Valley and Meridian will meet in the other.  The second and third seed between the two is not yet finalized.

On the girls side, Nooksack Valley will be the top seed and will await the Meridian-Mount Baker winner in one semifinal.  Lynden Christian, as the #2 seed, will play #3 Blaine.

One important note on the 1A’s this year, as they do not have to play the crossover games with District 2.  The top two teams from the five-team 1A tournament, advance to state.

2A Boys

Lynden is currently the top seed, with Cedarcrest in second and Anacortes third.  None are set in stone, although the Lions have a cushion, but are facing a tough week.

Cedarcrest has two very winnable games and will be tough for Anacortes to catch.

Bellingham has the #4 seed as of now, with Lakewood fifth and Squalicum sixth.  Bellingham and Lakewood have been flip-flopping in recent days, with Squalicum recently joining the three-team group.  The top four teams host quarterfinal games.

2A Girls

The top three are mighty close, with currently Burlington on top with Lynden second and Archbishop Murphy third.  Lynden hosts Burlington on Monday.  ATM plays at Marysville-Getchell (1-10 in league), so the loser of the Lions-Tigers game probably dropping to third.

Sehome has a strong hold on fourth, with Squalicum fifth.

For the boys and girls tournaments, all 12 teams in the district qualify, but only two advance to state this year.

3A Boys

Mountlake Terrace looks like a lock for the top seed.  Arlington holds a slim lead over Mount Vernon for second.  Arlington should win their final two games, so the Bulldogs would have to sweep their three games this week to have a chance at getting ahead of Arlington.  But they have a solid lead over #4 Shorecrest.

Ferndale is the 11th seed as of now, ahead of #12 Meadowdale.  The Mavericks should win one of their last two games.  Ferndale plays Lynden, Blaine, and Anacortes.  If things get rough, the Golden Eagles do have a solid lead over #13, Snohomish.

3A Girls

The Ferndale girls play the same three teams as the boys, but are in fifth place, slightly ahead of Everett.

Oak Harbor is seventh, well ahead of Shorewood, and a little behind Everett.

For the boys and girls 3A, the top four seeds of the 12-team district tournament will host quarterfinal games.  The top four finishers will advance to state.

When it comes to the WIAA State RPI, it’s kind of a good barometer of how teams have fared this year, but the state qualifiers will not be ranked in exact order of state RPI.  The tournament committee will use the state RPI as a seeding tool, however.

See?  This ain’t so hard.
