The Lynden Lions ran their Northwest Conference record to 7-0 with a 67-36 win over Bellingham, Thursday night, at Jake Maberry Gym.
Tied at 2-2 after four minutes of play, the Lions ran off eight straight points, but that was just the beginning. After a 3-pointer by Bayhawks guard, Wyatt Stephan narrowed the score to 10-5, the Lions ran off 19 more to make the score 24-5 before the Bayhawks recorded their next bucket with 5:14 to play in the first half.
The Bayhawks were without their top outside shooter, junior guard Harmon Wienkers, due to injury, which cramped the Bayhawks offense. But the Lions were superior in all phases on this night with efficient half-court offense, stifling defense, and an effective transition game.
Senior forward Anthony Canales was a big part of the Lions initial run, netting 18 of his 22 points in the first half. Junior post, Jack Stapleton, ran the floor like a track star, scoring 17 points, most of the time being the first Lion down the floor.
Sophomore Joe Harward, playing only in the second half, found his way to the rim on several drives, and led the Bayhawks with 14 points. Stephan was next in line for the Bayhawks with eight.
The Lions (7-0/9-3) next game is at Mount Baker on Tuesday. The Bayhawks (5-2/7-4) will take a trip south for a non-league game at Lakewood on Saturday, then travel to Oak Harbor for their next league contest on Tuesday.
