In the week leading up to Christmas, there were 20 games involving Northwest Conference boy’s teams. Eleven of the 20 were games decided by double-digits, while nine had 20-plus point margins.
On the girl’s schedule, it was even more lopsided, where ten of the 19 games were decided by more than 20 points.
I don’t know what that means, other than the standings are beginning to spread out, and teams are now on break and playing without the routine of the school day.
I did manage to see two tight games last week. Sedro-Woolley took Sehome to overtime, as the Mariners prevailed, 52-47, in a non-league match up on Thursday, of two short-handed teams (see game recap). They will play again in January.
Bellingham held off Ferndale, 50-45, on Friday (see game recap), keeping the Bayhawks (5-1) among the five teams with one league loss, or less.
Lynden (6-0) and Lynden Christian (5-0) remain undefeated in the NWC, with the familiar Mount Vernon Bulldogs (4-1) and the Anacortes Seahawks (3-1).
This is shaping up as another round-robin sort of thing as Mount Vernon has a win over Anacortes already, and the Lyncs have beaten the Bulldogs and the Bayhawks. Expect more of this when we get to 2024, and the last 33 days of the regular season.
Before that, there are some great events to take part in before we get to 2024.
The NWCBasketballReport staff will venture to Yakima for the SunDome Shootout. The NWC will be represented by Nooksack Valley, Lakewood, Lynden, and Anacortes. Each will play a game on Thursday and Friday. Check this out:
Thursday: Nooksack vs Toppenish; Lakewood vs Prosser; Lynden vs Zillah; Anacortes vs West Valley-Yakima.
Friday: Nooksack vs Quincy; Lakewood vs Selah; Lynden vs Mark Morris; Anacortes vs Enumclaw.
Meridian will host a two-day event on Thursday and Friday for boys and girls teams.
The Lynden Christian girls team will host a three-day tournament format with several highly rated teams. Lynden will be the other local team, along with Riverside (BC), Prosser, White River, Olympia, Snohomish, and Inglemoor. The tournament runs Thursday through Saturday.
The Sehome and Lynden Christian boys teams will play in a holiday showcase at Mountlake Terrace High School on Thursday and Friday. The Mariners will take on Prairie and Inglemoor, while the Lyncs will play North Creek and Mountlake Terrace.
And that’s not all. There are also single games out there, so check your local listings.
On Sunday, look for the weekly recap, as it will be time to make some observations on what teams are up to around the state.
