Last spring, the National Federation of State High School Associations altered the way free throw rules are administered in high school basketball games in all states.
Gone are the days of the one-and-one “bonus” situation on the seventh foul of a half.
Now, the bonus situation will be activated when a team reaches it’s fifth team foul in a quarter. On the fifth foul, and each thereafter, the opposing player will shoot two free throws. The team foul total will reset to zero at the start of the next quarter.
The change was made to reduce the possibility of injuries amid rough play in these rebound situations, according to the NFHS.
