Two teams went to bat Thursday night, each without a home run hitter. And, in overtime, the Sehome Mariners outlasted the Sedro-Woolley Cubs, 52-47.
The Cubs were without 21 point-per-game scorer, 6-4 sophomore Ethan DeJong. Meanwhile, the Mariners were missing their 6-6 senior post, Braddock Duckworth, who has logged 20-plus point games recently.
With those two out, others had to pick up the slack, and the Mariners were able that just a little bit better.
Sophomore guard Cliff Tadema, the Cubs second leading scorer at 13 a game, scored seven early points for the Cubs. However, the Mariners got a balanced scoring attack, and held the upper hand until the middle of the fourth quarter.
With the score at 43-43, Tadema was fouled with 1.2 seconds left, giving the Cubs a chance to steal the win. But he missed both free throws, sending the game to overtime.
From there, the Mariners scored six quick points and held on for the win.
The Mariners were led by freshman guard Quincy Tanovan’s 14 points. They also got 11 points from senior forward Austin McKay and sophomore post, Cole Turrell. Sophomore guard Nolan Wright finished with ten points for the Mariners.
Tadema led the Cubs with 15 points. Junior center Logan Roth scored 12, with 11 of those in the fourth quarter and overtime. Sherman Williams-Griffin, a 6-0 junior guard, hit four 3-pointers for all of his 12 points.
The Cubs (2-4/3-5) host Lynden on Friday, while the Mariners (4-2/5-3) are off until Thursday, December 28. They will play Prairie in a two-day event at Mountlake Terrace High School.
