Three of the four Northwest Conference boys basketball teams logged victories in the Yakima Sundome on Thursday, in the annual SunDome Shootout.
There were 14 games played on the two SunDome courts, with the same set for Friday.
Nooksack Valley 59, Toppenish 37
The Pioneers record grew to 7-2 with their win over the Wildcats (1-6) of the 1A SCAC.
The Pioneers used their superior size and strength to overpower the Wildcats. They even used their length in a full court press to narrow the passing lanes, resulting in early steals and transition buckets, setting the tone for the day.
Junior forward Tristin Kamphouse led the Pioneers’ balanced scoring attack with 12 points off the bench. Junior point guard Caden Heutink added 11, while senior forward Joey Brown dropped in ten. Junior post Brady Ackerman controlled the inside against the smaller Wildcats and scored nine points.
The Pioneers will play Quincy, Friday at noon, on day two of the Shootout. The Jackrabbits (6-4) lost to Columbia (Burbank) 76-42 on Thursday.
Lakewood 75, Prosser 66
The Lakewood Cougars used a solid defensive effort in the first half to control the dangerous offense of the Mustangs of the 2A CWAC. The Cougars led by nine points at halftime, then held a double-digit lead through the second half to even their record at 4-4 on the season.
Sophomore forward Caleb Greenland led the Cougars with 22 points. Senior guard Ben Rucker added 16 points, while senior forward Jordyn Isam finished with 11. Defensive guru, junior guard Evan Stacy, hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter and finished with ten points.
The McClure brothers from Prosser (6-4) scored well but had trouble early when the Cougars were building their lead. Kory, the senior, led the Mustangs with 23, while Koby, the junior, scored 16. They combined for 29 points in the second half.
The Cougars will take on another CWAC team on Friday. They play Selah (4-4), a 78-60 winner over La Center, at 9am.
Zillah 60, Lynden 55
The Zillah Leopards of the 1A SCAC improved their record to a perfect at 7-0 with a come from behind win over Lynden on Thursday.
The Lions held an 11-point lead with under three minutes to play in the first half, then struggled on offense and went ice cold from the field.
Leading 30-19 at the 2:50 point of the second quarter, Zillah went on a 14-2 run over the next six game minutes to take a 33-32 lead. The lead then changed hands over several possessions before the Leopards took control.
Senior forward Nic Navarre and sophomore guard Dekker Van De Graaf hit big shot after big shot in the second half, as the Leopards outscored the Lions 36-23 after halftime.
Navarre led the Leopards with 20 points, while Van De Graaf added 14.
The Lions got 19 points from senior forward Anthony Canales, and 16 from junior forward Brant Heppner. Junior forward Jack Stapleton added 12 points for the Lions.
The Lions (7-3) will take on Mark Morris (5-4), Friday at noon, in a rematch of last year’s 2A championship game.
Anacortes 77, West Valley (Yakima) 53
The Seahawks used the middle two quarters to race past the Rams of the 4A Big-9 Conference.
With the score tied at 14-14, junior guard Davis Fogle led the way for the Seahawks, scoring 17 of the team’s 23 second quarter points, as the Seahawks built a 37-25 lead at halftime.
The third quarter was more of the same, as Fogle knocked down 14 more, including a 4-point play at the end of the quarter. The Seahawks led 61-40 with one quarter to play and eventually built their lead to 27 points.
The Seahawks also got 14 points from junior guard Jake Andrew, and 13 from sophomore forward Micah Dickison.
The Rams (6-2) had two players score well, with sophomore forward Parker Mills and junior guard Landen Birley scoring 19 points each.
The Seahawks (6-1) will take on Enumclaw (5-3) at 130pm on Friday.
